5 tips from a personal trainer to getting started in the gym
Getting started in the gym is a tricky business, so I thought I’d share some Do’s and Don'ts from my experience as a personal trainer running my gym in Cork…

1. Start in the Gym slowly and build up your fitness gradually

We have all heard the adage, “Slow and steady wins the race”, and this is especially true when it comes to exercising and setting some fitness goals. Taking the time to make small, realistic changes can be the most effective way to reach your ultimate goal.

It’s easy to get overwhelmed by an ambitious goal and lose sight of what needs to be done to get there. That’s why it’s important that you focus on each step of the journey, break down your goals into manageable chunks, and make sure you don’t skip any steps along the way.

2. Avoid over training – it’s the classic beginner’s mistake

From my experience working with hundreds of people as a personal trainer, when most people get started, they try to fix everything all at once…

It’s too extreme.

Going from one extreme to another is never a great idea. You need to learn how to walk before you can run.. and I literally mean this when talking to clients sometimes.

Your body will tire quickly; you may get disinterested or even pick up an injury and throw in the towel… Then before you know it, you are back to square one.

3. In your first month set realistic fitness and exercise goals

Week 1. Fitness and exercise goal

Try something different in your first week, like getting in two walks or two gym sessions with a Personal Trainer. Even if you don’t change how you eat, it’s still an effective way to start to make positive changes.

Week 2. Fitness and exercise goal

Incorporating physical activity and changing your diet will have a positive effect on your health. You could make immediate changes by going to the gym twice a week and reducing things like sugary drinks and excess sugar in tea.

Week 3. Fitness and exercise goal

Consider adding a 30 min walk on a separate day to your two weekly Personal Training sessions or fitness classes. Try to limit fizzy drinks and cut down to one takeaway meal per week. This could help make a positive difference in your lifestyle.

Week 4. Fitness and exercise goal

Build on Week 3. Make an effort to add another thirty minutes of walking time into your daily routine and continue to improve the nutritional value of meals by incorporating more healthy foods.

4. Build momentum into your fitness routine

These first 4-6 weeks are crucial; changing your lifestyle isn’t easy, but getting the ball rolling is essential. It’s like a plane that needs to pick up speed to lift off; it’s similar when you’re trying to get into a fitness routine – you need momentum.

“Unless you build up your fitness momentum, you will crash, lose interest and burn out.”

A combination of small changes adds up to make a big difference! Don’t just build habits to last a few weeks or months. Build them gradually so that they become part of your lifestyle.

To illustrate, if weight loss is your goal, then it’s better to lose 1 lb a month over 12 months than it is to lose 10 pounds in 1 month and end up 10 pounds over your starting point after the 12 months is over.

Also, remember that each day won’t always be a good one; some days will be better than others, but that’s all part of the process.

5. Join a Fitness Class or Sign Up With A Personal Trainer

Well I would say that wouldn’t I :-) But seriously, if you find yourself struggling to make progress, it may be time to enlist the help of a professional.

A personal trainer or fitness coach can provide the guidance and support you need to stay on track and succeed. Their knowledge and experience can help you create a fitness plan that works best for your goals and who motivates and encourages you along the way.

  2. This is a fantastic roadmap for anyone starting or restarting their fitness journey! The emphasis on starting slowly, setting realistic goals, and avoiding overtraining is spot on. Building momentum through gradual, consistent progress is such a key takeaway—small steps really do add up over time. I love the idea of breaking goals into weekly chunks, making fitness changes manageable and less overwhelming. Also, the reminder that not every day will be perfect is a helpful reality check.
